2017-12-29 Wood County Historical Center & Museum Receives Gift of Wheelchairs
Contributed by Kelli Kling

The Wood County Historical Center & Museum is pleased to be the recipient of two new wheelchairs, courtesy of BG Manor and BG Care Center.  The donation will be presented to the Historical Center on January 9, 2018, at 10:30 AM by Jeff Miller, Business Development Coordinator for the organization.

Guests and media are welcome to attend.

“BG Manor and BG Care Center is a family-owned company that just wants to give back to the community,” said Miller. The Bowling Green facilities offer short-term and long-term care in the Bowling Green area, and have done so for over 40 years. The Historical Center was originally the County Infirmary, a pre-cursor to the nursing homes and rehabilitation centers of today, so this partnership is a good fit.

The wheelchairs will be available to any visiting guest at the Wood County Historical Center and Museum, located at 13660 County Home Road in Bowling Green. Since the completion of the “Step Up” Accessibility Capital Project in 2017, the museum is now fully accessible with an elevator, four improved restrooms, and handicap parking. This improvement on the 150-year old building has come with a great response from the community, as seen by an increase in attendance and many positive comments. “Visitors sometimes need assistance in order to relax and enjoy the experience without concerns of mobility,” according the museum’s Education Coordinator, Michael McMaster, who conducts many of the tours. “Since we are open this winter, through the week, they will soon be put to good use.”

The Museum is open for self-guided tours Monday – Friday, 10 AM – 4 PM with a primary exhibit Over There! Send Word, the Wood County Boys are Coming! depicting WWI’s impact on Wood County. Beginning February 1, 2018, a new exhibit, The Return to Normalcy: A Life of Leisure in Wood County, will open and public hours will include weekends 1-4 PM.

2017-07-13 27th Annual Summer Musical is History!
Contributed by Debi Huffman

For 27 years, it has been our pleasure to bring the “Summer Musical in the Historic Town Hall” to the Grand Rapids community.

2017’s production was “Déjà Vu – A 26 Year Retrospective”, performed by a talented all-volunteer cast and crew.  They deserve much thanks and praise for their dedication and hard work!  This production featured solos, duos, groups, and ensembles that performed songs from each of the 16 musicals we’ve performed in the Opera House at the Historic Town Hall over the past 26 years.

Special thanks to Hayley Babcock, who, once again, stepped up to direct this year, our amazing Board Member, Lynne Long, the accompanist, and our members, who served as greeters/chair lift operators: Judy Peper (Saturday & Sunday), Bernie & Jean Scott (Saturday) and Joe Long, & Mike Fatzinger (Sunday).

Thanks also to 3B Productions for their costuming assistance and LaRoe’s Restaurant for their contributions to the cast party.

2017-06-20 Lincoln Street Revitalization Project Begins!
Contributed by The Lincoln Street Revitalization Committee

For the past several decades, Lincoln Street in Grand Rapids has been the pathway through which thousands of visitors have passed on their way to perhaps “the most beautiful spot in North America”, the Great Rapids of the Maumee River.

Lincoln Street was the vision of Don Entenman, then president of the Historical Society of Grand Rapids.  The street came to life through the collaboration of the Village and the Historical Society using funds from a grant secured by Village Administrator, Chad Hoffman, and monies derived from the Historical Society’s Applebutter Fest.  The plantings, public restrooms, seating, and pleasant ambience enhance the village and river experience for visitors and residents alike.

Our intention is to refurbish the plantings and landscape in Lincoln Street and to incorporate a water feature and plaque that will commemorate the role played by Don and Audrey Entenman in the transformation of Grand Rapids from an aging river town to the vibrant village it is today.

A committee from the community was formed in March to oversee the revitalization plan development and it will see the project through to completion this summer.  Early efforts were focused on raising funds for the project. Calvin Babish, a Toledo stonemason, designed the water feature and we worked with local landscape professionals to create the plantings.

View the project renderings and follow the project progress on our Village Beautification Projects web page.  Click here to view.

If you are interested in providing financial support for this project, please download the form below and return to the address provided.  As we will have ongoing maintenance expenses, all contributions are greatly appreciated!  The Village is providing in-kind services, including utilities.

2017-05-09 Change in Summer Musical Announced
Contributed by Debi Huffman

The Historical Society is pleased to announce that its 2017 Summer Musical will now be "Déjà vu, A 26 Year Retrospective".

We have had a change in plans for our 2017 Summer Musical. With the bridge closure and competition for performers with other area productions, it became obvious that we would not be able to perform "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" this year.
In its place, we've decided to do a retrospective of all of our musical productions from 1991 through 2016, which will eliminate the need for an extensive rehearsal schedule. We are very excited about bringing back some of the special moments of the past 26 years and to have our prior Director, Sam Macera, assisting us in this effort.

If you are interested in being a part of this year's production, please complete the contact form on our website.

Please help us get the word out to performers from years past!

2017-04-06 Summer Musical & Auditions Announced
Contributed by Debi Huffman

The Historical Society of Grand Rapids is excited to announce that its musical production this summer will be Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.   The music was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice.  This family-friendly story is based on the “coat of many colors” story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis in the Bible.  All dialogue is sung. Webber wrote the music in a variety of styles, from French ballads to Elvis to western to calypso to music of the ‘50’s.

Performances will be July 7th, 8th, and 9th at the Historic Town Hall in Grand Rapids.  For more information, please visit our Summer Musical event page here.

Auditions will be held on April 30th from 2-4 pm and May 2nd from 6-8 pm at the Town Hall.  Parts are available for all ages, including many roles for men and a children's choir.  Those auditioning should bring a short prepared vocal piece, show tune, or hymn and be prepared to dance (accompanist provided).
Persons for non-stage and behind the scenes positions are also needed.  This is a great family activity!

If you are interested or have questions, you may complete the 2017 Summer Musical Interest Form on the Summer Musical page (click here) or contact the director Diana Waugh at 419-351-7654.

2017-01-20 Wood County Historical Museum Fully Accessible for the Public
Contributed by Kelli Kling

The Wood County Historical Center & Museum is pleased to offer elevator access throughout the museum as the Accessibility Project comes to a close. The museum opened as the Wood County Infirmary in 1869, and while it has been maintained, has not received a modern update of this magnitude until this time.

The Accessibility Project included not only a service-grade elevator that opens from both the exterior as well as the interior of the building, but also four new handicap accessible restrooms, handicap parking, and bus access from County Home Road. The improvements will benefit visitors with mobility conflicts or strollers, group tours, and provide a safer way to move large and heavy Society artifacts.

The first elevator ride was honored to Felicia Konrad, who is a life member of the Historical Society, Accessibility Donor, and has a family legacy to Edwin Farmer, Infirmary Superintendent from 1878-1904. During Edwin’s tenure, his son was admitted to the Infirmary when he became confined to a wheelchair, and could not even share a room with his wife because her room was on the second floor. The story of Alfred and Amy Farmer is chronicled on the museum’s website at woodcountyhistory.org.

The nuisance of physical limitations reached its peak in the 1960s when the building was slated for closure in lieu of a new nursing home (Wood Haven). Since becoming a museum in 1975, studies and feedback from members and visitors put accessibility as one of the site’s biggest challenges.

To support the 1.2 million dollar project, the Historical Center was awarded $600,000 from the State of Ohio’s capital funds as well as support from Wood County Commissioners Jim Carter, Doris Herringshaw, and Joel Kuhlman,
State Senator Randy Gardner, State Representative Tim Brown, Hancock Wood Electric Community Trust Fund, CSX Community Grant, and generous donations from community supporters.

The Collaborative, Inc. was the architectural firm on the project and Focht Construction Company served as the contractor.

The museum will re-open to the public on February 1, 2017 with new exhibits to highlight the impact of World War I on Wood County. All events detailed at www.woodcountyhistory.org. The museum is located at 13660 County Home Road in Bowling Green.

2016-09-26 Abraham Lincoln to Kick Off 40th Annual Applebutter Fest
Contributed by Debi Huffman

What is Applebutter Fest?  It is historical re-enactments, pioneer demonstrations, crafts, live music, food, and family fun along the beautiful Maumee River in downtown Grand Rapids, Ohio. This Fest, one of the largest in Northwest Ohio, is always the second Sunday in October from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and falls this year on October 9th.

For the first time, a special event will be held on Saturday, October 8th, the night before Applebutter Fest.  A Civil War era church service begins at 7:15 p.m. with President Abraham Lincoln, who will share with us his spiritual journey.  The service concludes with the cannon fire that traditionally signals the start of the Fest.

Join us downtown at the Wright Pavilion on the towpath between the Old Gilead Side Cut Canal and the Maumee River at the end of Lincoln Street.  This event is free and open to the public.  Bring your lawn chairs or blankets for seating.

Music for the service will be provided by the Napoleon Community Band and the Henry County Chorale. The Napoleon Community Band is a volunteer organization, formed in 1985 by the late Roger King, retired Napoleon High School band director.  The Band performs for community events throughout the area.  The Henry County Chorale is a nonprofit adult community mixed chorus that is based out of Napoleon, Ohio.

John Cooper of Baltimore, Ohio has portrayed Abraham Lincoln for more than 25 years. He is a self-avowed history nut with an extensive library that includes over 100 books about Lincoln and his colleagues. Mr. Cooper excels at the toughest part of portraying an historical figure, which is to remain in character and time period.

He enjoys the opportunity to meet with people of all ages, especially children, to share stories about Lincoln and his life.   To this end, you will be able to meet Abraham Lincoln starting at 5:00 p.m., as he walks along Front Street in downtown Grand Rapids.

2016-07-19 Wizard of Oz Wowed Audiences
Contributed by Debi Huffman

The 2016 Summer Musical in the Historic Town Hall was held Friday, July 8th through Sunday, July 10th. This year's performances of The Wizard of Oz were sold out and audience feedback very positive. Thanks to everyone, cast, crew, families, and audiences, who were involved in any way with this production!

Following is a review written by Sam Macera, our former director of 25 years.  Check out the cast list and photos on our web page here.

There were no tigers or bears but there was a lion, a  scarecrow, a tinman, Muchkins galore, a good witch (she was very good) a bad witch (she was very bad), a good man who was a bad Wizard, flying monkeys and a little girl anxious to go home.
They were all brought to vibrant life on the Town Hall stage as the Historical Society of Grand Rapids presented the beloved musical, TheWizard of Oz to a packed house each performance.
The sets were very simple but effective with just enough dressing to suggest the scene. The few required pieces were moved on and off efficiently by stage manager Deb Frickie and daughter Abby.
What made the show were the excellent performers cast by first-time director Hayley Babcock.
Leading the talented cast was Lydia Babcock as Dorothy. It is a demanding role but she made it believable with a good voice and her acting. Her “Over the Rainbow,” sung as she sat on the edge of the stage was very effective.
Practically stealing the show was Joshua Hergert as the Cowardly Lion. His voice, facial expression and animation made him an audience pleaser. His rendition of “King of the Forest” deserved an encore. Tyler Cowdrey (Scarecrow) and Sam Hayes (Tinman) rounded out the trio of Dorothy’s companions. They all played off each other very effectively and added much to the show.
There was not a more wicked person in the hall than Laura Hoag, whether as Miss Gulch or the Wicked Witch.  As the Wicked Witch she was outstanding. Her makeup and raspy voice made for the threatening character required in the show.  Angie Weber as Glinda was a welcome contrast to the Wicked Witch with a charming smile and a good voice.
I have seen a number of productions of Wizard of Oz, but no Toto was more pliable,  calm and cooperative than Shadow Fricke! It should have an agent.
As the Professor and the Wizard, Bart Soeder gave a good reading of both. The scene where Dorothy and her friends confront the Wizard, suggested by multiple pieces of a face, was excellent. A very clever staging.
The highlight of the show had to be “The Jitterbug,” sung and danced by Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion, Tinman and the nine specialty dancers. It was extremely energetic and the hand movements were precise. And the final tableau at the end was deserving of the extended applause.
Other highlights were the crows (Alissa Zapiecki and Gabriella Hoag), the apple trees (Sarah Dysard, Linda Lee, Maria Georgiafandis, Deb Harley, Shannon Sorosiak-Simon), the Flying Monkies (Brandon Svanberg, Landon Fricke, Logan Fricke, David Nonnenmacher).
Hayley Babcock directed with assistance from Diana Waugh (assistant director), Sarah Dysard (choreographer), Debbie Fricke (stage manager), Mari Brandebarry (set design), set construction by Dave Fitch and Mark Pike with Gary Waugh handling the lights.
Accompanist Lynne Long and percussionist Tom Montgomery proved you don’t need a full orchestra to provide superior musical support.
Congratulations to the Historical Society and to Hayley Babcock and her staff for successfully bringing Oz to life in the small Town Hall theatre to the enjoyment of  a packed house every performance.
It was not the classic MGM film of The Wizard of Oz, but it was a classic production of the Historical Society.

2016-03-25 3rd Annual Civil War Reenactment Day - HOLD THE DATE!
Contributed by Debi Huffman

On May 14th, we will hold our 3rd Annual Civil War Reenactment Day in conjunction with the Otsego 8th Grade Social Studies Department.   The committee, comprised of Historical Society Board Members and Otsego teachers, staff, and student volunteers, is hard at work planning this year’s event.

For several weeks prior to the event, students study the Civil War from various perspectives, including Soldier's Life, Camp Life, Medical, Farm/Home Life, Art/Music, and Underground Railroad, as well as the roles of men, women, and minorities. These in-classroom studies are brought to life at a one-day event held on the 2nd Saturday in May on a 17-acre field owned by the Historical Society and located off Sycamore Road in Grand Rapids, Ohio.  This event is open to the public.

Stations / tents are set up for each area of study.  One tent is dedicated to the letters home from a Civil War soldier. More than 100 students work with reenactors at the stations and fulfill the roles of soldier, civilian, bugler, drummer, and/or strolling minstrel.   The day culminates in a Civil War battle.

“Play Ball!" New this year, visitors will have an opportunity to join in short, informal, cricket games that American cricket player and historian Tom Melville will conduct on a continuous walk-up basis throughout the day. The games are open to all; no experience required!

For more information, please visit our event web page here, where you can also see photos from the previous years' events.

2016-02-21 - New 43522 Community News Site Launched
Contributed by Debi Huffman

Founded in 1975, the Historical Society of Grand Rapids Ohio’s mission is to provide education on our region's rich history, bring the community together through historical & cultural events, and help fund the activities of other local nonprofits.

The 43522 Community News is an integral component of this mission and we have now launched an online news site that will provide a tremendous service to our community - a forum that ties the entire community together and enables residents and visitors to become more active in the community.

We are very excited about this news site, as it eliminates some of the challenges we had with the newsletter format. There are no publication deadlines.  News is posted, as it is received.  There are no limits on the number of articles that can be included.  Further, we are able to include images, photographs, documents to download, and links to other web and social media sites.  Events and activities are automatically included in the Community Calendar with links to sites for more information.

Our challenge now is to engage local organizations, clubs, churches, services, and businesses in our new initiative.  If you belong to a group that is not yet a contributor to the site, please contact us at 43522communitynews@gmail.com.
