Thomas Howard
Thomas Howard was born November 15, 1758 in Dresden, Yates, New York. He was a surveyor and Revolutionary War Veteran, who served as a private in Captain Hugh McAllister's company, 7th battalion of Cumberland County, PA, militia, Colonel James Purdy's regiment in 1782.
The Howard family was prominent in the history of the Maumee Valley. Thomas Howard came from Yates County, NY with his wife, daughter, three sons, and their respective families. Part of the family came by water, the rest taking the land route and driving their livestock. They were the first white settlers on the south bank of the river, where they erected three cabins in 1822 from which to the Indian mission, eight miles below, they cut a road in 1823, settling opposite the Indian village of "Kinjoino".
The first death in the settlement was that of Thomas Howard May 25, 1825. He is buried in the Howard Cemetery located at the corner of Front Street and Wapakoneta Road. The Howard Cemetery is now owned and maintained by the Village of Grand Rapids.
